    Job Title: Security Manager Department: Security Reports To: Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Employment Type: Full-Time ________________________________________ Position Summary The Security Manager at Fernbank Museum plays a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for staff, guests, volunteers, and visitors, while also protecting the museum’s collections, facilities, and historic properties. This role is ideal for a leader who believes that great security starts with great customer service, clear communication, and strong people management. The Security Manager balances risk awareness with approachability, ensuring safety practices align with Fernbank’s mission as a trusted, public-facing cultural institution. ________________________________________ Leadership & Team Development • Lead, coach, and support a diverse security team with a strong emphasis on professionalism, hospitality, and guest experience. • Recruit, hire, train, and retain security staff to ensure adequate coverage and consistent service levels. • Set clear expectations, provide ongoing feedback, and empower team members to perform confidently and compassionately in a public-facing environment. • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team culture rooted in Fernbank’s mission and values. • Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance evaluations, and development conversations to support growth and accountability. • Model calm, respectful leadership, especially during high-pressure or sensitive situations. ________________________________________ Security Strategy & Risk Management • Develop and implement security practices that protect people, collections, and facilities without compromising the guest experience. • Conduct regular risk assessments related to public safety, collections protection, and facility operations. • Partner closely with curatorial, conservation, facilities, and visitor experience teams to ensure security protocols are enforced and support museum operations. • Adapt security strategies to evolving needs, including special exhibitions, high-volume events, and seasonal programming. ________________________________________ Physical Security & Operations • Oversee day-to-day security operations, including access control, surveillance systems, alarms, and patrol procedures. • Create and manage staff schedules that align with museum hours, events, and operational demands. • Coordinate with third-party security vendors as needed. • Provide security oversight for special events, permanent and traveling exhibitions, historic properties, and associated parking areas. ________________________________________ Emergency Preparedness & Incident Response • Maintain and support emergency preparedness plans, including evacuation procedures and disaster response. • Lead training sessions and drills to ensure staff feel confident responding to emergencies. • Respond to and investigate incidents such as injuries, safety concerns, disorderly conduct, suspicious activity, theft, vandalism, or vehicle-related issues. • Ensure incidents are documented accurately and thoroughly, including reports, statements, photos, and video evidence. ________________________________________ Compliance, Culture & Guest Experience • Promote a security approach that reflects Fernbank’s commitment to respect, inclusion, and community trust. • Ensure policies and procedures are applied consistently, fairly, and with cultural sensitivity. • Leverage security technologies and best practices to enhance the visitor and staff experience. • Serve as a visible, approachable leader who reinforces safety through presence, communication, and relationship-building. ________________________________________ Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Museum Studies, or a related field or equivalent professional experience. • Prior experience leading teams in security, facilities, operations, or another public-facing environment (museum or cultural institution experience strongly preferred). • Demonstrated success managing people, resolving conflict, and delivering service in complex, high-traffic settings. • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage calmly and respectfully with staff, visitors, and external partners. • Sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and the ability to balance safety, hospitality, and mission alignment.
