The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art (STMA), a single artist museum opened in 1997, is offering an internship in Buckhead, Georgia (Morgan County). The intern selected will have the opportunity to participate in the National Parks Service Grant: Save America's Treasures. The intern will go behind the scenes into our archives to assist the Collections Manager and museum staff in cataloguing material culture in our collections management system, PastPerfect, a museum-based software program used by over 11,000 museums worldwide. This internship will be 100% on site. The intern will be learning about the artist, the museum, and our mission; digitizing original records which include art, art tools, personal letters, newspapers, photographs, etc. that all tell the story of the prolific artist, Steffen Thomas; holdings maintenance such as sleeving torn documents, removing staples and rearranging records; complete audits of scanned images; creating an in-depth catalogue with staff advising, to be used for the upcoming exhibition(s); with assistance of staff, if needed, create a record in PastPerfect and place item in dedicated storage in archives; translate 25+ personal journals written in German; interview the artist's daughter, who has worked closely with the museum since its creation, to include recordings and written stories about the artist and his work; create an oral history studio, with the staff, including detailed instructions for use. Our goal is to create a more complete database that we can share as an educational tool. Our 7-county rural school partners would love to have more opportunities to expose students to fine art and engage them in all the available resources electronically. The timeframe begins with the fall semester and will continue for two years. You do not have to commit for more than a semester, but if mutually agreed you could intern longer or start earlier during the summer. A stipend of $1,500 per semester will be available: $15 per hour; 100 hours per semester, 10 hours per week. The ideal candidate would be interested in Art and History (1900-present). No museum experience is needed, just a trustworthy, willing hand. Knowing or studying German would be a plus. Brief History of Steffen Thomas Steffen was born in 1906 in Furth, Germany. He knew he wanted to be an artist by the age of six and after being apprenticed to a stone mason at 14 years old, he showed such talent that he was accepted to some of the most prestigious universities in Europe. After he achieved Master status at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he immigrated to the US in pursuit of the American dream. Settling in Atlanta, Georgia, by 1930, he made his mark on the art world and met his future wife, began a family, and continued to do commissions until the late 1950s when he decided he was going to do the kind of art he wanted to do. Thanks to Steffen's wife Sara, we have thousands of pieces of art work and ephemera here in our museum that we are able to share with visitors today. The museum collection contains work in a variety of media that Steffen explored and mastered: sculpture in metal, wood, stone, and plaster; mosaic in hand-made frames and on hand-made furniture; painting in oil, acrylic, encaustic, and mixed media; watercolor; drawing; printmaking in etching, woodcut, linocut, lithograph, and collagraph. Our current exhibits - Steffen Thomas Art: his works, about his citizenship (in tandem with the US 250th anniversary exhibition), family room, timeline; Reimagine: Contemporary Georgia Artists; outdoor sculptures by Steffen Thomas.
