    Supervisor: Executive Director

    Type: Full-time; non-exempt

    Salary: Starting at $12 per hour

    Organization Overview

    Since 1969, the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home in Rome, Georgia, through its passionate team of volunteers and staff members, has worked diligently to save the historic Major Ridge Home and interpret the complex story it represents. Major Ridge, the first known owner of the house, was a Cherokee leader who played a pivotal role in Native American and United States history of the 19th century. Our mission is to preserve and interpret the history of the 19th century Cherokee through the life, home and property of the Ridge family.

    Position Summary

    Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home seeks a creative, hands-on Museum Manager who can develop educational and public programs centered on the Museum’s mission. These programs and activities should be designed for diverse audiences throughout the community and the visiting public.

    The Museum Manager’s primary duty is the care, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of the museum; however, the position requires a large degree of versatility to meet the needs of the museum. The Museum Manager is also expected to play an active role in creating and implementing educational programming for both school groups and the general public, assisting with social media, newsletter and other marketing activities. The Museum Manager will also assist with planning, scheduling, and supervising volunteer activities. The Museum Manager is responsible for office organization and will assist the Executive Director in monitoring membership, acknowledging donations, tracking appointments, computer and website maintenance, filing and other administrative areas, as needed. Finally, the Museum Manager will assist with various duties of the museum as needed including grounds and house maintenance.

    Primary Job Responsibilities

    In consultation with the Executive Director, the Museum Manager will be responsible for the following programs and tasks:

    Day-to-Day Museum Operations and Maintenance (40%)

    • Schedule and lead tours of the museum to general visitors, school groups, and special groups.

    • Open and close the museum each day. Museum staff follow a schedule of maintenance and cleaning to ensure the museum campus and buildings are organized, clean and preserved for all to enjoy.

    • Support the gift shop by restocking, assisting visitors with purchases and creating an inviting retail and educational atmosphere.

    Educational Programming (25%)

    • Develops and coordinates school field trip activities. Initiates and follows up with contacts at schools to promote available programs.

    • Develop and implement summer camp activities for children.

    • Support the Executive Director in developing and implementing special programs and exhibits related to the Museum’s mission.

    Office Administration and Marketing (25%)

    • Coordinates marketing and communications by social media, email, museum website, press releases, mailings and newsletter.

    • Promotes museum events.

    • Updates donor database (PastPerfect)

    Volunteer and Event Coordination (10%)

    • Maintains a database of contacts to carry out special activities and volunteers to assist with school field trips, special activities, and programs.

    • Assist with special museum events.

    Desired Skills and Qualifications

    The ideal candidate:

    - Has excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral

    - Possesses a passion for history and historic preservation

    - Is a self-starter, highly trustworthy and can work independently

    - Is flexible and willing to wear many hats

    - Has at least three years relevant work experience.

    A bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in history, museum studies or a related field is desired.
